Exeter Guitar Lessons
Hi, I’m Matt, a local guitarist who has been playing for over 15 years and a guitar teacher for over 5. I’ve played in multiple bands, most extensively with the ceilidh band Pigasus, which is part of Exeter University’s Folk Society.
I was the band leader for Pigasus for 2 years and in addition to providing the music for ceilidhs, I’ve written my own arrangements which we’ve performed live. In this time we performed at local venues such as the The Great Hall, The Phoenix and the Sidmouth Folk Festival. I also have several jazz projects I’m currently working on, as this genre is a big passion of mine.
On the teaching side, I began by teaching family and friends before later taking on private students while doing my degree. Now graduated, I’ve worked for the last year as a freelance music tutor teaching guitar for kids at several schools and fitting in private students around this schedule.

Student testimonials:
“Matt has been teaching me guitar for a few months now having started as a complete beginner after a few sessions with Matt I feel much more confident in my ability all thanks to his relaxed but informative sessions which really allow me to develop and grow at my own pace. I highly recommend Matt as a guitar teacher for all abilities he really is very welcoming, talented and knowledgeable!” - Amy
“Before working with Matt, I felt I never had the knowledge or confidence in myself to improvise on the guitar. I found I was limited to learning songs but not being able to transfer that into playing freely. Within my first session, Matt had me working on improvising over a song I’d shared with him. He broke down the chord sequences, their relation to scales, and would entertain all my questions and provide encouraging responses and examples. I think Matt is a wonderful guitar teacher and that any students would be lucky to have his patience, kindness, and energy at their disposal.” - Nik
“Matt is a great guitar teacher. He’s very approachable, and always takes the time to customize lessons to my interests and goals. I highly recommend him.” -Maria

No. I would be happy to lend one of mine during the lessons, and even recommend this if you are a beginner who wants to try guitar before committing to buying one.

A good teacher will:
Help you stay motivated
Help you focus
Help you overcome roadblocks quicker
Teach you proper technique to avoid bad habits
Teach you shortcuts to speed up your progress
Teach you music you love by making it more accessible
Provide you the most value for your own time by greatly speeding up your progress
-
All ages.
I do a lot of teaching in schools so have worked with children as young as 5 on guitar, and would recommend shorter lessons for the young ones.
I’ve also taught a lot of adults including a dad and son pair. It honestly never is too late to start!
