Exeter Guitar Lessons

Hi, I’m Matt, a local guitarist who has been playing for over 15 years. I’m currently a full-time musician and music teacher, tutoring 1 to 1 music lessons 3 days a week in schools and teaching from home 2 days a week.

Over that time, I’ve played in multiple bands (Folk, Jazz, Rock) and in local venues such as The Great Hall, The Phoenix and the Sidmouth Folk Festival. Currently my main band work is as the guitarist in the Folk Ceilidh band called Mad Robin. I also have a jazz band in the works, as this genre is a big passion of mine.

On the teaching side, I began by teaching family and friends before later taking on private students. A few years ago, I dived into teaching in schools, caught the teaching bug and have never looked back!

As a teacher I am relaxed and encouraging towards my students. I am happy to accommodate whatever the student needs and create tangible goals for us to progress towards. I particularly love teaching students how to play with others and get popular pieces they know to a performance level. If you are looking for guitar lessons in Exeter then please get in touch, I am open to any ages and can cover many genres. I look forward to helping you work towards your goals!

Student testimonials:

“Matt has been teaching me guitar for a few months now having started as a complete beginner after a few sessions with Matt I feel much more confident in my ability all thanks to his relaxed but informative sessions which really allow me to develop and grow at my own pace. I highly recommend Matt as a guitar teacher for all abilities he really is very welcoming, talented and knowledgeable!” - Amy

“Before working with Matt, I felt I never had the knowledge or confidence in myself to improvise on the guitar. I found I was limited to learning songs but not being able to transfer that into playing freely. Within my first session, Matt had me working on improvising over a song I’d shared with him. He broke down the chord sequences, their relation to scales, and would entertain all my questions and provide encouraging responses and examples. I think Matt is a wonderful guitar teacher and that any students would be lucky to have his patience, kindness, and energy at their disposal.” - Nik

FAQ’s:

  • Yes, I am happy to travel for students if that is preferred. In this case, I will add a small travel fee for the time + travel costs. For the Exeter area this would typically be between £0-5.

  • Typically weekly. However, I am available for lessons on an irregular basis if this is convenient for you.

  • No. I would be happy to lend one of mine during the lessons, and even recommend this if you are a beginner who wants to try guitar before committing to buying one.

  • A good teacher will:

    • Help you stay motivated

    • Provide a clear structure for progression

    • Teach you technique to avoid bad habits

    • Teach you learning techniques to speed up your progress

    • Provide you the most value for your own time by greatly speeding up your progress

  • All ages.

I do a lot of teaching in schools so have worked with children as young as 5 on guitar, and would recommend shorter lessons for the young ones.

I’ve also taught a lot of adults including a dad and son pair. It is never too late to start!
